The buddy I interviewed makes around 900 yen an hour. Which roughly translates to $7.56 an hour. This is the average minimum wage in America. So it's obvious that he makes less money an hour than myself, however, the costs of most goods here are significantly less.
Necessities- My buddy stated that most of his money goes towards necessities. These are daily things such as meals, snacks, and drinks. The trend here is to eat lighter meals several times throughout the day. Versus America, where the trend is to eat three big meals a day with snacking mixed in.
Relaxation- For relaxation, my buddy stated that he reads manga, walks around local parks, and visits temples and shrines. This is similar to how I spend my time relaxing in America. Relaxation in Tokyo is generally cost free, which adds more value to the "little" money he makes.
Entertainment- This is where things start to drastically differ. My buddy has the ability to visit Akihabra (Electric City), which opens up exciting doors for entertainment. There are multi-level arcades for gaming, instead of in America where gaming is done mainly on consoles, and arcades hardly exist. Other forms of entertainment comes from reading manga, watching animation, and visiting all of the amazing places in Tokyo.
